28 February

Dear Middle School Parents,

Welcome back grade 6 students and teachers from their phantastic Week Without Walls experience in Yelagiri. Some of the highlights included: early first morning mystery hide and seek, the visit to the local school which included a talent show with singing and dancing and playing outdoor games, a nature walk, learning yoga, some team building games, and a visit to a local Mulberry and fruit farms. They also did some journaling and wrote reflections on their days.  Our Week Without Walls trips are a great opportunity for our young adolescents to build on their independence and personal responsibility, in addition to forging stronger relationships with their peers, and appreciating more of our incredible host country.

Once we have all the photos compiled, we will share them with students and parents.

Middle School Coffee 18 March at 8:45 in BBT
The next middle coffee will be dedicated to the Service Learning Task Force to give you an update on the program and where we are at this point. The presenters will talk about service versus service learning and what it might look like in the Middle School in the future.

Model United Nations (MUN) Parent Meeting
MUN is an extracurricular activity where students assume the roles of countries and organisations represented in the United Nations in specific committees. The aims of an MUN conference are to encourage debate and sharing of views between students from different schools and of different ethnicities. The ultimate goal is to promote awareness of international relations and issues in young people, and to inspire global mindedness and an understanding to the problems of the world and how to combat them, whilst providing an atmosphere where students can progress in their communication skills and open mindedness. This would allow students an insight to further their understanding and learning of politics in a global and international manner.

There will be a parent meeting on 19 March at 3:45 in the BBT for all delegates who will be traveling to Taipei in April. We will provide details of the trip and answer any questions you may have.

Congratulations to the MathCounts Team
We were not able to get the pictures out last week, but here they are. Please congratulate the following students for taking Second Place at the Math Counts in Bombay. Shreyas Saxena also took Third Place individually.
Grade 6: Reuben Nielsen
Grade 7: Haegun Cho, Tarun Krishna and Siddesh Vijayakumar
Grade 8: Shreyas Saxena, Uday Saharia, Vikram Sivakumar and Sang Hyeok Lee

From our Athletics Director-Mr. Ron Thomson

First of all, I would like to congratulate all of our awesome Track & Field athletes for a great job at the Track Meet this past Tuesday and Wednesday. I felt like a proud Papa watching all of our teams compete to the best of their abilities. The old expression  "leave it all on the track and give it your best" was definitely the theme of these two days. Well done!

I want to send out a big "thank you" to all of our school personnel for making this meet happen at the National Stadium. Without the hard work and support of our administration, security team, maintenance staff, nurses and volunteers this could not have been possible.

Now we move onto the next challenge of the season, the 2014 SAISA Track & Field Meet, which we will be hosting from March 12-14. With an event this size, we will need a lot of help. So if you are interested in working 1, 2 or 3 days of the Track Meet, please let me know.

We have many critical jobs to fill and really need your support. The list of jobs is endless. So please let me know if you want to be part of this great meet.

Have a good weekend.

French 6/7A: Students have just finished a unit about places in a town and talking about where they are and where they are going. Students learned how to order food in a restaurant, how to ask for and give directions to various locations around a town, and practiced the verbs être (to be) and aller (to go). Some students will start a unit about their daily routine. In this unit they will do a presentation talking about their own daily routines, the classes they take, and what they often do in the evenings. Some others are working on a project in which they design a school in French West Africa, using any combination of media and computer programs they wish, which they will present to the class and then be asked questions, in French by the class, (taking the role of "African/ International students" ) who might be interested in attending the school.

French 7/8B: Last week students finished reading "Le chouette bouquet," a short story from Le Petit Nicolas, and this week they have been working on retelling the story in a comic strip form, or by creating an RSA animation video. Students will finish these projects next week, so make sure to ask your child to see the final product. In both classes we are also continuing to study the past tense.

Spanish 6/7A:  students are learning to talk about their school routine. They have learned the vocabulary for classes, school supplies, and verbs related to school work. They are recycling what they learned in the previous unit to describe their teachers, and to say whether or not they like a class, and why.

Spanish 7B - Grade 7 are learning how to extend, accept and decline invitations. Within this topic, students are reviewing previously learned material to explain that they have other plans or obligations. Some students have just finished being waiters in a restaurant in a South American country and will now be realtors trying to "sell" a house to interested buyers.

Spanish 8A- Grade 8 students have just finished writing dialogues in pairs, using excuses, and are now learning about families. They will present their family poster to the class in small groups.

Spanish 8B - Grade 8 students have been working on the topic of family and celebrations. They have been discussing topics such as family values, the role of each family member within their culture, and what makes each family unique. They are also working on the launch of a class newspaper where they will publish articles on topics of their interest.

Have a good weekend.

What are students currently learning in math?
In Grade 6 Math, students are starting the Stock Market simulation project-- which involves finding and using percents and finding interest. This project also involves designing a company and making choices about how to invest one's money wisely. Students have to make choices and risk potential gains or losses in the "trading days" on our Stock Market floor. Have your child explain it to you and their gains and losses in their trading days.

In Grade 7 Math, they are learning about Inequalities and how to solve and express their solution sets on a number line. Particular attention is being paid to analyzing real life situations and defining the solution sets of the inequalities involved. Analyzing and interpreting vocabulary is a key element of this unit as each form of inequality can be expressed in a variety of ways.

In Grade 7 Accelerated Math, students have just finished with expressions and equations and have begun unit on the Ratios and Proportional relationships. This unit assists students to develop a deeper understanding of numbers. They will learn to express ratio in different ways (fractions, decimals and percent), find unit rates to compare quantities, discover how to identify and explain the constant of proportionality in equations, tables and graphs. They will also solve problems involving ratio and percent and scale drawings within real world contexts.

In Grade 8 Math, students have just finished solving systems of equations and have began our unit on the Pythagorean Theorem.  Students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem  to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles and the distance between two points in real-world mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.  They will also explore and explain some of the different proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.

In Grade 8 Accelerated Math, students have started exploring quadratics through graphing the function f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k.  They will learn how transformations affect the characteristics if the graph and identify key parts like vertex and whether the parabola opens up or down.  They will then learn to solve quadratics by using both square roots and graphing.

You can see the increasing complexity of the math concepts as students progress from year to year. Please take the time to ask your child(ren) about it. Having them explain a concept to you reinforces their learning.

Have a good weekend.

7 February

Dear Middle School Parents,

Next week, we will invite you to Celebrate AISC Week.

We will begin the week with the Horses of Ayyanar Assembly on Monday, 10 February. Starting on Monday, the AISC Visual Arts Department will welcome a group of local artists with expertise in constructing large clay Ayyanar horses to our campus. Over the course of two weeks, the Tamil artists will demonstrate the ceramic process of building the horses. There will be workshops for our art students across the K-12 curriculum. Artist workstations are planned throughout all areas of our campus from 10 - 20 February.

BACKGROUND: Ayyanar horses stand as tall as 12 feet and have been used as guardians at local temples and villages. This traditional art process originated in Tamil Nadu. Our intention is to create the experience for our students to see this traditional process of large scale clay construction, and also to support local arts and culture within our community and host country.

We will end the Celebrate AISC Week on Friday, 14 February.  We will celebrate our first ever All-School Spirit Day!  We ask everyone to celebrate our school by wearing AISC colors - blue and white.  All staff, parents and students are invited to meet on the soccer field at 8:20 for a school-wide photo!  Remember, to wear BLUE and WHITE and to be on the field promptly at 8:20.

Two trips next week…
We announced these trips a few weeks ago. We just want to wish these students the best of luck. We are thrilled to have them represent AISC.

In connection with the local artists coming for the Horses of Ayyanar, we will be focusing on the Art Department this week. This next month middle school art students will be learning about the Ayyanar horses while we have the visiting artists on campus! As the students visit the various workstations to study and document the building process of the local artists, they will be working in the art room to apply the same building techniques to create their own unique animal sculpture.

They will also observe a variety of techniques that the local artists use to design and embellish the surface of the sculptures. The students will not only observe this process, but will create clay stamps that the visiting artists will use to incorporate in the actual horse sculptures. The students will then use a similar process to add decorative motifs to their own guardian animal sculpture.
