Dear Parents and Students,
 

This week we celebrated our students creativity and growth in our band and choir programs at our MS/HS Concert. If you missed the concert, you can watch the recording here. Thank you to Mr. Jason Kennedy and Mr. Robert Krebs for their dedication, teaching music entirely online this year and producing a virtual concert to showcase our students performances. A special recognition to all of our music students, performing remotely in order to contribute to our ensemble programs! The concert reminds us of the perseverance and resilience demonstrated by our students throughout this entire school year, and our longing to see each other again on campus!

Special Deliveries
In the past couple of days the AISC middle school has had a few items put together to be delivered to your child.  There is the MS Advisory t-shirt, a happy face stress ball, a lollipop, and an AISC face mask. These are small tokens of recognition for your child’s effort and commitment to this year's virtual school experience.  Know that the middle school teachers are cheering your child on these last weeks of school!  Believe, Always!
 

May Long Weekend
There is no school Monday, May 3. Online classes resumes Tuesday, May 4.

 
Virtual Learning Continues        

• We will continue operating on IST.
• Please contact the MS office if your family leaves Chennai before the end of the school year. This helps our teachers to know who is not on IST.
• Connection times are recorded and posted on PowerSchool. Students out of time zone can watch recordings when it is convenient for them.
• All modules are designed to be completed individually if students cannot attend connection times.
• If it is unreasonable for students to attend 9:00am IST connection times in your time zone, recordings are available for students to watch the connection times missed. Modules can be worked on independently. Students can stay in contact with teachers via email should they need to make appointments with teachers.
• All students, regardless of time zone, should continue to complete the daily check in form to register their attendance, even if they miss a block because of time zone differences. 

 
Portfolio Conferences

Portfolio conferences are student led and are an opportunity for students to present artifacts and reflections of their learning to parents. These conferences are students’ own evaluation of their learning and a time to celebrate successes and identify challenges.

 

This coming week, Wednesday through Friday, we invite you to participate in your child’s portfolio conference at home at a time that is convenient for you. Students have received instructions on how to conduct conferences through advisory. Here are complete instructions for students and parents. Parent instructions have been translated into French, Korean and Japanese for your convenience.

 

There is no formal follow up on the conference required; however, we would love to see students sharing their portfolios with parents. Send a selfie during your at-home portfolio conference to msoffice@aischennai.org!

 

AISC Times: April Edition

The April edition of the AISC Times is an all student-produced MS newspaper created by this fearless team of editors and writers: Chaitanya, Ha Young, Jisu, Mihika, Sahana,  Yashvi and Yuina. Students led the entire process of creating this edition, all of the way from drafting to publishing. Thank you to our newspaper team for keeping our MS up to date through the monthly newspaper as they spotlighted important events, highlighted faculty and students, and shared new ideas with their audience!

 

MS to HS Coffee                                                                                                                           To provide information for 8th grade parents about the transition from 8th to 9th grade, the high school counselors are hosting a parent coffee with 9th grade parents as special guests. During this parent coffee, which will be held on Tuesday, May 4th from 8:45 to 9:45 am, you will hear from  9th grade parents about classes, support, communication, extracurricular activities, social life, and stress.  Please bring your questions as well!

Also, we highly encourage all 8th grade students to attend 9th Grade Orientation hosted by the high school Raptor Agents on Tuesday, May 11th at 10:00 am. Orientation is a great opportunity for 8th grade students to learn more about high school and connect with current high school students and each other! 8th grade students will be provided with the Zoom link information next week.

Return of School Materials

As family travel plans for the summer may shift, all items belonging to AISC must be returned to campus before the summer break or your family's departure from Chennai. All students, withdrawing or returning, must return school property before the end of the school year. In the coming weeks, you will receive notifications for outstanding items from the library, individual classes, and ASAs. Students who are withdrawing will not be able to finalize the process if items are outstanding.

 

Returning Instruments

If your child is in band, please read the instructions about returning school instruments. If you have questions about instrument return, please contact Mr. Kennedy (kjason@aischennai.org) or the MS office (msoffice@aischennai.org).

 

Past School Reports for Withdrawing Students

Parents of the withdrawing students please note that you can collect ONE paper copy of the past school reports of your child from the school any time starting from Tuesday, May 2 after sending an email to msoffice@aischennai.org Please note that these reports are ready for families who have already submitted the withdrawal form. 

Also, please note we will be able to provide final Semester-II report and Transfer Certificate paper copies only on June 4.

If you child will not be continuing at AISC next year, please complete the “Request to Issue Transfer Certificate/Past Records” form linked in the Quick Links section of the blog in the sidebar. Please complete this form and submit it to the MS office msoffice@aicschennai.org.

 

Withdrawal Process Explanation

To initiate the withdrawal process, the Request to Issue Transfer Certificate/Reports form must be submitted. The certificate is available on the Principal’s Notes blog and from the MS Office. Once the Request to Issue Transfer Certificates/Reports form is submitted to the MS office with a confirmed date of withdrawal, it may take up to five school days to process your request. This is standard operating procedure for each withdrawal.  

1. Documents will be issued only on the last day the student is enrolled.
2. We provide only these documents: cover letter, transfer certificate and past school reports
3. We provide only ONE copy of the documents. Copies are the responsibility of the family. 
4. Documents cannot be issued till the student has returned all the school property i.e. library books, musical instruments.
5. The student needs to be cleared by the finance department in terms of fees and other payments.

Please note that emailing the MS office to inform us of your withdrawal date does not initiate the process. The process begins when the completed Request to Issue Transfer Certificates/Reports form is submitted to the MS office.

 

Stamping Documents

Please allow 24 hours for documents needing official school stamps to be processed by the middle school office. As noted above, we will make one copy of official school documents. Additional copies are made by the family and stamped upon request by the MS office. Documents are sanitized upon receipt and before returning them to families. Please plan accordingly for your timelines if you need documents stamped.

Friday April 23

Dear Parents and Students, 

This week we pioneered remote testing for the MAP Growth Test. Students tested in Reading and Math. Thanks to our students for doing a super job following instructions throughout the testing sessions and to our IT department for their support in the preparation for these sessions and addressing individual tech issues during the session. Students who did not complete a test from one of the sessions will be contacted with a time to finish the test. We will have one more testing session on Wednesday, April 28 for the Science and Language Usage tests. We will follow the same communication and testing procedures from this past week. Details for this week’s test are below.

Vision for a Learner Day Supplies
April 30 is our Vision for a Learner Day. Students have selected day long activities to participate in. Some of these activities require supplies. Students should have received an email from the activity advisor with the supplies needed. Please check with your child that they have the supplies they need on hand for April 30! Next week, we will be sharing links to student artifacts/products from the day in this space!

Dear Parents and Students, 

As we head into the last weeks of the school year, it is important to think about ending the year well and demonstrating on-going resilience through commitment to our endeavors. No doubt, staying motivated and engaged in our 13^th month online is difficult. In classes and as a middle school, we are planning for opportunities for fun, personalization, and exploration to keep students engaged. Vision for a Learner Day is coming up April 30. We are looking forward to piloting this experiential learning day! Celebrations of our arts programs are coming in the weeks ahead: MS/HS Music Concert, MS Theatre Performance, and our MS Art Exhibition. Look for the opportunities to take advantage of student choice in final class projects to explore new ideas that truly capture your interest! Capture all that is available to you to end the year well!

 

MAP Growth Testing
This week’s parent coffee provided an overview of MAP Growth Testing and guidance on how to support your child during the remote testing sessions. If you were not able to attend the coffee, you can access the information here: MAP Parent Coffee Slides and Parent Coffee Video. 

If you are unfamiliar with MAP Growth testing, you may find these common questions (and responses) helpful to provide you with more background on the test.

Now is an ideal time to review your child’s progress on the current module and progress since mid-term reports. You can access PowerSchool to see assignments and progress on standards. Support for PowerSchool and the log in link can be found on our Digital Skills Academy. We also suggest taking time to have your child guide you through each of their classes and progress using PowerSchool. If you have questions about an assignment, assessment or progress in a specific course, please contact the teacher directly.

High School Celebration of Learning for Eighth Grade Students

Dear Parents and Students,

As you will see below, we have a number of activities happening in the middle school and schoolwide to bring us together as a community in April. As we continue through this year in online learning, we are reminded of the importance of these events that bring us together, albeit virtually. Today’s Middle School Assembly was a perfect example of coming together to celebrate individuals and groups and maintaining our sense of community. Parent Coffee
This week, we will host our April Parent Coffee. This month’s coffee will focus on the Measures of Academic Progress Growth Test. We will be administering the MAP Test virtually this year. At the meeting, a brief overview of the MAP test will be provided along with instructions for how to guide your child while he/she is taking the test remotely. Vision for a Learner Day
As shared last week, April 30 will be Vision for a Learner day. The purpose of the day is for students to explore a VfL trait of their choice through a number of activities hosted by teachers. See last week’s blog post for a menu of the choices. Students’ choices have been confirmed and next week they will receive email messages about any supplies they may need to participate in the activity on April 30. Please check with your child so s/he is ready for the day! Vision for a Learner day is a class day and all MS student are expected to attend the day long activity they have chosen. Students will spend the day working on their chosen activity with teachers and students and will also have time to explore and learn asynchronously. 

 

Next Week is Well Week!
The intention of the week is to bring attention to wellbeing and share our experiences. For each day of the week we are in school, AISC will bring attention to one of the four domains of wellbeing. 

Throughout the week AISC community members will be asked to:

Monday: Self-Awareness - How are you feeling?
Identify a color or colors that represent your emotion(s) and create a visual representation or art form of those emotions.

Tuesday: Healthy Habits - Try something new!
Select a Healthy Habit that might be new to you or that you have started this year and then share a video of yourself doing the activity or a description of the activity. 

Thursday: Positive Relationships - Gratitude & Kindness
Reach out to someone and show gratitude and commit to a random act of kindness. Then, share your experiences of showing gratitude and kindness through photos, videos, or written descriptions.  

Friday: Self-Management - Share your tips!
Reflect on how you manage stress, persevere through challenges, and control impulses. Then, share tips with the AISC community about your practices.

 AISC is celebrating Earth Week from April 19-22. This year’s theme is A Call to Action. The week will feature student projects and live presentations on environmental sustainability, zero-waste workshops, and more. Thursday April 1

Dear Parents and Students, 

Welcome to a three day weekend! As we begin April, we will begin sharing information for events and procedures to ensure we end the school year smoothly. We also have many school-wide and section events taking place throughout the month. Please check the AISC calendar frequently and refer to our blogs to stay informed! 

Course Selection Process for 2021-22
Students currently in grades six and seven will select their electives courses for the next school year on April 5. Please take some time this next week to review the courses with your child. This elective course form will be available in the student daily bulletin starting on Monday, March 29. Students will choose four electives courses they are interested in during their advisory period on April 5. Efforts will be made for students to get one of their top two choices in their schedule. However, please be aware that all course combinations are not available for all students. Please understand that any of the four courses chosen may appear in your child’s schedule for next school year. 

 

Calendar Update: Polling Day -- Tuesday, April 6^th – No School
Tuesday, April 6^th has been declared a Polling Day for elections in Tamil Nadu. AISC will be closed virtually and on-campus for all classes, activities and meetings.  

MS Vision for a Learner Day
Our annual Week Without Walls grade level trips focus on developing the attributes in our Vision for a Learner profile. As grade level trips were not possible this year, we are introducing a Vision for a Learner day in the middle school. On April 30, all MS students will be able to participate in an activity from the selections in this menu. This week, students have had the opportunity to review the menu and make their selections. You can see in the menu that each activity is designed to develop a VfL trait. We are looking forward to having fun, exploring this opportunities, and taking time out to focus on the Vision for a Learner. 

2020-21 Yearbook Updates
Thank you to all of our families for your submission of student photos for our yearbook. We have worked with Konica photography to edit backgrounds to ensure a uniform presentation of student photos. A few notes about what to expect in this year's yearbook, as we are creating it under unusual circumstances:

·  The photo you/your child/student submitted will appear in the yearbook.

·  The name you/your child/student submitted will appear in the yearbook.

If you did not provide a photo of your child/student, a photo has been pulled from our student information systems. This has been done so that each student enrolled by March 26, 2021 could be included in the yearbook. If you did not submit a photo of your child/student, and his/her photo was pulled from our student information systems, we have used the first and last name in the system.

2. We provide only these documents: cover letter, transfer certificate and past school reports
3. We provide only ONE copy of the documents. Copies are the responsibility of the family. 
4. Documents cannot be issued till the student has returned all the school property i.e. library books, musical instruments.
5. The student needs to be cleared by the finance department in terms of fees and other payments.

Please note that emailing the MS office to inform us of your withdrawal date does not initiate the process. The process begins when the completed Request to Issue Transfer Certificates/Reports form is submitted to the MS office.

Stamping Documents
Please allow 24 hours for documents needing official school stamps to be processed by the middle school office. As noted above, we will make one copy of official school documents. Additional copies are made by the family and stamped upon request by the MS office. Documents are sanitized upon receipt and before returning them to families. Please plan accordingly for your timelines if you need documents stamped.

Returning/Departing Chennai
If your family is departing Chennai before the end of the school year, please contact the middle school office msoffice@aischennai.org for changes in your time zone.

AMIS Solo Music Festival
Congratulations to Nandini, Keshav, and Melchi for their participation in the AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) solo music festival. AISC Theatre Spring Production; So We Can Flourish

 

So We Can Flourish (25th Anniversary Production)

A group of explorers sit on a beach, staring at the world in front of them. A city spread across the coast; a collage of futuristic IT parks, rubbled buildings and ancient temples. In the middle of it all; an oasis of learning. Over the course of 25 years, the explorers, who are resilient, empathetic, thinkers, and innovators, try to uncover what it means to truly flourish.

 

This original production is based on real life interviews of AISC community members, conducted and composed by senior year student Seoyoung Ryu ('21), retelling their stories of the school's impact and growth with Chennai over the past 25 years. The production features original costume designs by Anjali Seshadri ('24), Erin Sullivan ('24), Hera Kwak ('21), Kavya Krishnan ('24) and Yejin Choi ('23) and a proposed set design by SJ Lee ('22).  

Family Use of the AISC Libraries
AISC families are able to request books every week from our libraries using this Google form. Books can be ordered through the form from Friday until Monday at 10:00am and can be picked up curbside at the ES entrance on Wednesdays between 8:30am - 3:30pm. Bags with the child's name clearly marked on the front will be located inside the white cubbies. Patrons are invited to take the bag that belongs to them without touching any other materials.  

In addition, a book drop is positioned curbside at the ES entrance, as well as the main entrance, for returned books. We encourage families to return the books after two weeks, although if a specific title is needed for a longer period, please contact Babs to implement an extension.  

Library staff will practice all health and safety protocols while gathering your books. Upon return, books and the canvas bags that are distributed will be sanitized.
