Dear Middle School Parents,

Welcome to the end of the school year. There are many things to wrap up, helping students finish the last stretch, especially with those who are leaving. Please do not forget that it is also difficult for friends who are staying. Help your children say goodbye to their friends as well.

Please note that ASA ends on Friday, 29 May, but there will still be Saturday soccer this weekend.

The end of the year is quickly approaching. Many parents at the three-way conferences asked us for ideas of fun activities for their son/daughter to do during the summer. We talked about a number of ways to prevent what teachers call the summer slide.  What is the summer slide?

It can be defined as the loss of academic skills over the summer break. When kids don't read, work math problems, or aren't engaged in other learning experiences, their education doesn't continue and can actually regress.

Your son/daughter has worked hard this year, and he/she deserves a vacation. However, if you are looking for some fun ideas, here is a page that we created.  One simple, but fun idea is to have your son/daughter send us a postcard from their home country or vacation and tell us about a book they are reading (title, author and why they are enjoying the book). We would love to know how our students are enjoying their summer, and this is a simple and fun activity to share a book they are reading.

It has been a pleasure to teach your child this year.  Enjoy the last week of school and have a safe, fun, and restful summer.

Middle School SEVAI (Service) Learning Project

Our first MS prototype of a service project ended on a successful note last weekend. MS students collaborated with ten orphans from the Disciple Church Orphanage to repair 10 bicycles. Our students, representatives of all three grades in the MS were selected based on their interest and enthusiasm in the STEM Fest Project and their interest in service learning. Participants learned how to disassemble, assess, and repair and/or replace broken parts to restore bikes to a working condition. Click HERE to see some photos. All bicycles were donated to the children afterward. We would like to recognize and acknowledge Ryan and Heidi Sager who initiated this project with the support of MS SEVAI, Balajee, Scott Larson, and the MS SEVAI committee (Rob Martin, Michelle May, Lindsay Dinsmore, Jaya Shanker, Fer La Torre, and Widi Sumaryono). We look forward to exploring new opportunities to build service learning into our curriculums and middle school next year!

End of year Recognition Assemblies

As we are coming close to the end of the school year, there will be some celebration done for each grade level at the End of year Recognition Assemblies on Thursday, 4 June. Each grade level holds a year-end assembly that celebrates and is tailored to their age level. This approach to end-of-year recognition is in keeping with the middle school philosophy and is a positive and meaningful celebration for all of our students.

The 6th grade will be celebrating the important goal that each student feels that they have accomplished and will be given a certificate stating the attainment of their goal. The 6th grade I-awards will be held in the FAC auditorium. All sixth grade parents are invited at 1:15 to celebrate and recognize the emotional, intellectual, and social achievements that sixth grade students have made.

The 7th grade recognition assembly will be in the BBT. The 7th grade will  present certificates recognizing student  with the 4 C’s Awards during this formal part of their assembly. All seventh grade parents are invited to this portion of the assembly at 2.30. Afterwards, the ‘fun’ awards will be presented for only grade 7 students.

The 8th grade celebration will be in the Cafeteria. All eighth grade parents are invited to this portion of the assembly at 2:30. The first part will be a slide show and 4 C’s activity with parents. The second thirty minutes will include two different reflection activities  for all students.

Grade 1 Service Project

The first grade is working on a service project to help protect the Olive Ridley turtles found in Chennai. Next week, May 25-29, students will have handmade items for sale to raise funds for the TREE Foundation. From 12:20 - 12:45 the students will have a table at the FAC. From 8:00 - 8:30 and 3:30 - 4:00 the students will have their tables in the grade 1 hallway. This will be a donation-only sale, and all proceeds will go to TREE Foundation.

Students are also collecting old towels and bedsheets. These are used by TREE Foundation to transport and clean the rehabilitating turtles. You can drop off these items in the boxes located at both the ES and Main reception areas.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found items are stored near the MC rooms. Sonia David in the main reception holds the valuable items. Kindly visit these areas if your child has lost something.

These items that have been found will be displayed on tables in the main entrance from Wednesday, June 3rd through Friday, June 5th. Please stop by to see if any of these belong to your family. Those items not claimed by Friday, June 5th will be donated to local orphanages.

ES Community Service Project

The Elementary School Student Council has planned a community service project that will happen over the next three weeks. We are collecting clean newspapers to donate to The Cheshire Home India-Madras, Creating Opportunities for People With Disabilities.

We are planning to collect newspaper until May 22. Collection boxes will be located in the following areas.

ES/Main Reception

ES/HS Library

ES/MS/HS Cafeteria

When you are finished reading your newspaper, drop it off in one of the collection boxes so it can be turned into something useful!

MS Band and Choir Concert

The MS Music classes will be putting on their end of the year concert for us on Friday, 22 May at 2:00pm in the FAC Auditorium. Please join us to listen to some beautiful music as the students show off their musical skills that they have been practicing on all year. For parents of music students, please see the music concert uniform requirements below.

MUSIC CONCERT UNIFORM

The neat, uniform appearance of Band and Choir members contributes greatly to the formality of the event. Looking sharp increases our students’ pride of accomplishment and the audience’s perception of the ensemble. Students that will be participating in the MS music program must wear special clothing for concerts consisting of a pair of full-length black dress pants, black dress shoes (no sandals), black socks and black belt. These pants and shoes can be purchased locally at Bata and other stores. Ask for school uniform pants and shoes.

In no case will black jeans, tights, skirts, shorts/pedal pushers, or sandals be an acceptable onstage attire.

A black music shirt purchased from the school store rounds off the concert outfit. This is a special, semi-formal shirt with our school’s official music logo. Any student who already possesses an AISC Music logo polo shirt may use it again. The polo shirt will be available in the iHub store.

End of year Recognition Assemblies

Departing Students and Transitions - Why are transitions so hard?

As we are approaching the end of the school year, we also face with the departures of friends. Here is something from our counselor, Ms. Trish, to keep in mind:

“LOSS is at the core of every transition”

Things to do before you go:

1. Tell your friends how important their friendships have been. Perhaps leave them some memento of a special time you have shared.
2. Schedule time for your farewells: friends, neighbors, pets, teachers
1. Write a note or make a visit or bake some cookies to bring over to say “Thank you for being a special person! I will miss you!”
3. Visit the places that you will miss and say goodbye. You can even bury a secret object there so part of you will always be left behind there.
4. Take some photographs for memories.
5. Choose some sacred objects to take with you to remember the life you had here and special place that you lived in.
6. Talk and share with friends, family and teachers, how you are feeling.

Finally……..“Think Destination”…..learn something about where you are going. Connect with someone or something there.

Know your interests and Get Involved in your new environment and school.  Do the things that make you happiest!

Dear Middle School Parents,

There is a buzz in the air on our campus today and the buzz will continue tomorrow. We are hosting Basketball and Swimming in the last ASIAC tournament of the season for this school year.

The athletes have gotten up early in the morning to come to practice for the past couple of months and even come to school on Saturdays to improve and hone their skills. We admire their commitment and dedication to the sports.  More importantly, they have been practicing to be teammates, learning to work together and learning to take feedback and grow.

Let’s show our support, come and cheer on our athletes. You might catch the last basketball game today. If not, there is more action tomorrow starting at 9:30am.

Operation Smile Yard Sale

This year, Operation Smile is conducting a yard sale on Friday, 15th May to raise money for cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries. Please donate items in good condition that you no longer use at home for other AISC families/maintenance staff to purchase. You can simply place the items in bins marked Operation Smile Yard Sale placed at the high school office and reception, the middle school office and the elementary reception. These items will be sold by Operation Smile volunteers and the profits will go to the organization. Or, you can purchase a table for Rs. 1500 and sell your own items and keep the proceeds of the sale. If you wish to buy a table or if you have any questions please contact Nivi Sriram at snivedita@aisch.org.
