16 December

Dear Middle School Parents,

With everything going on in Chennai, I think we are all very glad that the break has come.

Because of the missed school days, unfortunately, we have not had the time to say proper goodbye to all of students who are leaving and especially those have left. For those who are leaving, please remember to visit our Photo Gallery at http://photos.aischennai.org/2016-2017/. You may want to download and keep some photos of your child’s time here at AISC. Password: raptors16.

Please encourage your children to read for pleasure. If you go by a bookstore, stop by and let them pick up a book, graphic novel or magazine. Allow them to read what they want, creating good reading habits is more important than what they are reading. Research says that it takes about 21 days (three weeks) to do something for it to become a habit, this winter break is the perfect time to form new habits. If you need book ideas, please remember to refer to our Summer Reading List 2016 and Summer Reading List 2015.

Make-Up School Days
Due to missed school days as a result of local events and weather in the past two weeks, the following days in January will be official school days: Saturday, January 21 and Saturday, January 28
Why these days?
We are engaging these days as make-ups for two reasons:
  1. They are at the start of the second semester when all students and teachers across the school can make effective use of extra learning and teaching time.
  2. They are Saturdays at the end of 4-day weeks with calendared holidays. Students and teachers will not have 6-day study/work weeks.

Further, please note that the two Early Release Days in January will be full days of school in order to provide more instructional time in the month we return from the break.

Parent Book Club Update
Based on your feedback, our first Book Club choice is Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World by Devorah Heitner. This book is available on amazon.in and through kindle. And again, based on survey feedback, we will meet in the afternoon, divide the book into sections and come together to discuss the section we've read. We'll meet on the following dates:

Thank you for your patience and flexibility through the last few days of uncertainty. We have been working hard to ensure that we can make up lost instruction time for both students and teachers. Next Friday, 16 December, instead of a Fun Meet in the Middle School, we will be using it as a day of instruction as well.

The ASIAC Soccer Tournament has been postponed until January 20-21, 2017. Upon return from the winter break, we will publish the tournament schedule. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the students who will be playing in the tournament in January.

Of the current 188 students in the middle school, below is the data of what how many students are involved in and the number of activities and sports they are involved in as well. Celebration of Learning in Art!
Come, enjoy and admire the talent of the 8th grade art students' self-portrait paintings on the 1st floor of the ES/MS CIC!  The students studied the artwork of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, and then painted their own self-portraits incorporating personal symbolism. The results are amazing.

Parent Book Group from the MS Counselor, Ms. Jen Gold
Hello MS Parents! I'll be starting our Parent Group up again in the second semester. With that in mind, I'd like to get some feedback from you on book choice and meeting format/time. Please take a moment to complete this short survey if you think you might be interested in participating. I will collect feedback until Wednesday and will notify you of our first book before we leave for winter break.
