Dear Middle School Parents,
What a phenomenal week we had and it is not over yet. We sent off 13 students to ISTA Festival in Bangkok this weekend. In the meantime, we have welcomed over 70 students from 11 other international schools around the world to the AISC campus. We would like to thank all parents who are hosting these students. We could not have done this event without your support.
We had a preview of the AMIS Choir Concert and it was spectacular. You’re in for a treat so don’t want to miss the Gala Concert on Saturday.
We have had mid-year conferences for the first time. Teachers commented that it was a great way to catch up with parents mid-year and meet new parents who came in later. Parents thought the timing of the conferences was really helpful to get a sense of how their children have been doing midway through the school year.

MathCounts Competition
MathCounts Foundation is a body set up in the United States by a group of sponsors such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation, Raytheon and some other private companies. The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the schools in the United States and the Overseas American International Schools. The coaching and the contests strive to excite the students about math by providing a fun and challenging experience that rewards their effort and achievement, while teaching young adults to be problem solvers and develop their competitive spirit and teamwork skills.
The following eight middle school students will be participating in the MathCounts Regionals on February 9th and 10th, 2018 in Cairo, Egypt to represent AISC:

SEVAI Day
We are excited to inform you of our 2nd annual Middle School SEVAI (Service) day will take place on Thursday, February 15th. This is an incredible opportunity for your child to volunteer and give back to the community. Grades 6 and some of grade 7 will be leaving campus after lunch and returning before 3:30. Grade 8 will stay on campus.
Grade 6 - The theme is animal welfare so they will be working with the Tree Foundation (sea turtles) and Blue Cross (animal shelter). Some students will be involved in taking care of animals in Blue Cross while others will be taking care of turtles, painting the walls in the building and caring for eggs in the hatchery.
Grade 7 - The theme is community building so they will be working with a local school: Seva Samajam. Part of 7th grade will host Seva Samajam students and teach them photography and soccer skills and the others will travel to Seva Samajam to learn Rugby and the Indian game of Kho Kho.
Grade 8 - The theme is giving back to AISC will be staying on campus working on appreciating our support staff. Students in 8th grade will divide themselves into groups to interview our staff, shadow some staff to see what their day is like, and to get some appreciation gifts packed and delivered to staff around campus.
We will be on a modified schedule for the morning. We encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of service and giving back and definitely ask them about their February 15th experience.
Parent Book Group Information from the MS Counselor - Reminder
Based on the parent survey, our Parent Book Group book for this school year will be Brainstorm: The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain by Daniel Siegel.
Our chosen meeting format, also based on the parent survey, will be to meet for four sessions. All English language levels are welcome! The book is divided into four parts so we will read one part for each week. I look forward to seeing many of you there! Happy Reading!
