Dear Middle School Parents,
There will be a lot of of exciting activities happening next week at AISC. To start off the week is the ES and MS Visiting Author with Lauren Stringer and Ruby Smith. This is brought to you by the generous donation from the PCA Visitors Fund:
Lauren Stringer
Lauren Stringer is an artist, author, script writer, and theatrical designer living in Minneapolis. She has exhibited her art in museums and galleries across the country. As an author and illustrator, she does numerous school visits around the world as well where she shares her passion for writing and drawing. Her work has won numerous honors, including the International Reading Association Children's Choice Award, the Minnesota Book Award, Booklist's Top Ten Art Books of the Year, and the Crayola Kids Best Book of the Year Award.
Ruby Smith
Ruby Smith is an international dance instructor, currently based in Tangier, Morocco. She teaches contemporary dance with a focus on personal expression, creativity, and connections between words, stories and movement. An esteemed choreographer, Ruby has worked with mentoring projects in the United States, as an artist in residence at the American School of Paris, and led dance workshops in London. Some of her work in London is also connected to performance workshops used to discuss important issues, such as domestic violence and other forms of abuse.
During the same week, we welcome 87 students from 15 other international schools around the Asia region to the AMIS (Association for Music in International Schools) Honor Band Festival, which will culminate in a final Gala Concert on Saturday, February 14 at 6.00 p.m. in the AISC auditorium. There is no better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than listening to the beautiful music of these young Mozarts, Bachs, Louis Armstrongs, and A.R. Rahmans. Follow them on the AMIS Website.
Along with the Visiting Author and AMIS Honor Band Festival, we welcome all of our guests with a Mini Art Exhibition in the Cafeteria. It was set up on Thursday of this week and will run until 20 February. Please stop by and see some of the amazing art the students have produced. You will be impressed!
MATHCOUNTS Competition
We also sent off eight students to represent us in the MATHCOUNTS Competition at the American Community School in Abu Dhabi, where they will compete with students from six other international school.
The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is the only competition program of its kind, with live, in-person events in all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories and schools worldwide through the U.S. Department of Defense and State Department.
The Competition Series is ideal for students who have a talent and passion for math who need to be challenged. Students will engage in exciting, "bee-style" contests in which they will compete against and alongside other bright, motivated students. Keeping it Clean at Home
While at school using the AISC network your child is safe from the risks of finding inappropriate adult content online. At home, however, they may not be protected by the same restrictions. Do you know how to be sure your child is safe while searching the web? Whether its a spelling accident or curiosity, be prepared at home by locking safe search on student BYOT devices. Here's how to do it.
- Sign in to Google with a Google account other than your child's.
- At the bottom of the screen choose Settings->Search Settings
- Tick the box Filter Explicit Results and click Lock Safe Search
- You will be asked to enter your password again. Use your password, not your child's.
- Click Lock Safe Search again and wait for it to complete.
- Complete this on other installed browsers such as Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox.
- When you search, you will now see some colorful balloons in the upper right.
- If your child is using his or her laptop in line-of-sight from you, you should be able to see this symbol to be assured.
Heads Up…
STEM Fest
On behave of the Middle School Math and Science Departments, we invite you to participate in our all school STEM Fest celebration on February 19th from 1:00- 3:30. All of our students have been diligently working on their projects which will be officially displayed and tested before the whole AISC community. You will be able to interview students and provide them with valuable feedback on their presentations and witness their engineering attempts.
SAISA Track and Field
The season starts on February 16 for students from 5th Grade-12th Grade.
Practice Days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
Time: 6:15a.m.- 8:00a.m.
5th Grade Athletes: Attend 2 days a week practice
6th-12th Athletes: Attend 4 days a week practice
*Athletes should attend the first practice with running shoes (preferably fairly new running shoes). They also need to bring a water bottle and change of clothes.
Mandatory Practice if you are a jumper or interested in learning how to long/high jump.
*February 18th and February 25th
*3:45PM-5:00PM High Jump and Long Jump Clinic Mandatory! (this clinic will count as one of your practices for that week)

Operation Smile ULead Conference
Dear Middle School students,
As part of Operation Smile, we are hosting AISC's first ULead Conference! Full of inspiring speakers, memorable leadership building activities, and cleft lip and palate awareness, we are excited to invite those of you who are interested to join us. The conference's main theme is to promote awareness for cleft lip and palate, as well as teaching and fostering leadership and teamwork skills. It will occur on the 27th and 28th of February. On behalf of our High School group, we'd like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to a weekend of inspiration and smiles.
