Dear Middle School Parents,
Learning Habits Update
You should have received an email from your child today with a link to their eportolio. If you have not received it yet, please ask your child to share it with you immediately. For the Learning Habits Update:
- Students individually conferenced with teachers to go over their Learning Habits.
- In Advisory, students individually conferenced with their advisor and look at the overall pattern of their Learning Habits
- Then they wrote a reflection on how their Learning Habits affect their academic performance.
What you see on their Learning Habits Update is an honest reflection of what your child has thought of his or her attitudes and attributes to learning for this second trimester.
We invite you to log on to your child's eportolio to look at their Learning Habits Update and have a conversation with them as well. We encourage you to peruse the blog posts on their eportfolio in preparation for the April Student-Led Conferences.
Should you have an specific questions about it, please email their teachers and advisors directly.

STEM Fest
The Middle School Science classes will begin our annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) festival on January 28th. Our focus is on creating solutions to solve problems using "green" technology and resources. Students can choose between a variety of problems to solve, each one having some connection to environmental awareness or the impacts of climate change. We also have a particular focus this year on finding solutions to problems related to the recent flooding in Chennai.
How can you parents help?
Since our focus this year is on Green Solutions we are asking families to help us collect recyclable materials to use to build our designs. If you can donate any of the supplies below, please send them with your son or daughter to their science class:
wood scraps
aluminum cans
old/scratched CDs
|
cardboard boxes
empty toilet paper rolls
|
plastic water bottles
plastic tubs
straws
plastic tubes
plastic egg cartons
shampoo bottles
bubble wrap
take-away tupperware
|
On the Green STEM Fest Day, Thursday, 17 March, we will share these projects; parents and community members will be welcome to attend. Please save the date on your calendar. You can support your son or daughter by encouraging, giving ideas, and helping with research; however, the building of the designs will be completed by students alone.
Hosting for SAISA Soccer and Tennis
In just a two weeks time, we will be hosting the 2016 SAISA Soccer and Tennis Tournament. We need your help in finding homes for our visiting athletes from ASB, AISD, LS, TAISM and OSC. We have 100 boys and 8 girls to house from Wednesday February 3 through Sunday February 7th.
Please reply to our housing director Ms. Sally Victor at vsally@aisch.org
if you can help us out. Full details are available from Ms. Sally in the Activities & Athletics office.
Thanks in advance for your hospitality.

The Third Annual AISC RAPTORTHON!!!!

Food Service Update
Free Lunch for Parents! Come join us in the FAC Cafeteria on February 1, from 11:30-1:00, to sample the student menu. Choices include salad, soups, Asian, India and continental meals all offered in both veg and non-veg. Parents will be asked to complete a short survey after tasting the menu items.
Prepackaged snacks are now sorted by nutritional value. We are happy to announce that the iHub and both cafeterias have three broad categories of packaged snacks, sorted by nutritional content. Students will be able to identify snacks using colored labels representing the total calories from fat in each snack:
- Blue= 15% or fewer total calories from fat
- Orange= 15%-30% of total calories from fat
- Grey= 30% or more total calories from fat
Please take some time to discuss this new system with your child. Reference posters will be placed in the iHub and both cafeterias to guide children in their snack selection, and they will be hearing about it in other ways too.
Fresh breads are now available in the iHub and ES cafeteria, as a choice for both sandwiches and take away. New varieties include tuscan bread, focaccia, bagel, multigrain, baguette, french loaf, oatmeal, panini, kalonji, and more. Please stop by and pick up a loaf for dinner.
Food services at AISC are always looking for ways to improve. Should you have questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact Food Service Manager Prakash Shanmugam (sprakash@aisch.org), Elementary Associate Principal Lori Newman (nlori@aisch.org) or Secondary Associate Principal Jason Hicks (hjason@aisch.org). If you have not had the chance to have a meal in the IHub or Main Cafeteria, please join us. We would love to hear your feedback about the food at AISC.
Have a great weekend.
